  1. structure in a cell nucleus that carries the
  2. genes. Each chromosome consists of one very
  3. long strand of DNA, coiled and folded to
  4. produce a compact body. The point on a
  5. chromosome where a particular gene occurs is
  6. known as its locus. Most higher organisms
  7. have two copies of each chromosome (they are
  8. diploid) but some have only one (they are
  9. haploid). There are 46 chromosomes in a
  10. normal human cell. See also mitosis and
